          a genus within the <term n="2"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Elatinaceae"
          taxon-name-part-type="family">Elatinaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>
          family, was first described by Linnaeus in 1771, honouring Petrus
          Jonas Bergius, a pupil of Linnaeus (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor003"
          type="bibl">Leach 1989)</ref>. With 29 species worldwide it is
          mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions, with Africa and
          Australia hosting the highest diversity as centres of diversity
          (POWO 2024). In India, there are seven species, with Tamil Nadu
          hosting three (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor006" type="bibl">Nair
          &amp; Henry 1983</ref>, <ref target="#_idTextAnchor001"
          type="bibl">Britto 2019)</ref>. However, confusion persists in
          Indian literature regarding the distinction between <term n="3"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Bergia" taxon-name-part-type="genus">B.</tp:taxon-name-part>
          ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="ammannioides"
          taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">ammannioides</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic>
          ‌<tp:taxon-name-part
          taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Roxb.</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></term>
          and <term n="4"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part

          features 5-merous flowers, while <term n="6"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Bergia" taxon-name-part-type="genus">B.</tp:taxon-name-part>
          ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="trimera"

          exhibits 3-4-merous flowers.</p>

          <p style="txt_Normal">While undertaking a botanical survey in
          Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, the authors have collected a
          specimen of <term n="7"
          type="taxonomy"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part
          reg="Bergia"
          taxon-name-part-type="genus">Bergia</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></term>.
          The identity of this specimen was traced with the help of published
          literature, local floras, online databases and herbarium collections
          at various herbaria. After consulting these sources it was found to
          be unknown to science and hence it is described as a distinct new
          species.</p>
        </div>

        <div type="section1">
          <head style="T_1" subtype="level1">MATERIAL AND METHODS</head>

          <p style="txt_Normal">The authors are conducting a comprehensive
          survey of the flora in the Cuddalore district for a doctoral degree
          since 2019. Methodology involves frequent field exploration to
          collect plant specimens, which are then processed using standard
          herbarium techniques. During one of these surveys, they discovered
          an intriguing herb in a dried pond near Veppur (<ref
          target="#_idTextAnchor009">Fig. 1</ref>). Identity of the taxon
          underwent a thorough literature screening using local floras (<ref
          target="#_idTextAnchor008" type="bibl">Thiselton Dyer 1885</ref>;
          <ref target="#_idTextAnchor007" type="bibl">Sohmer 1980</ref>; <ref
          target="#_idTextAnchor005" type="bibl">Matthew 1983</ref>; <ref
          target="#_idTextAnchor006" type="bibl">Nair &amp; Henry 1983</ref>;
          <ref target="#_idTextAnchor000" type="bibl">Bhattacharya 1993</ref>;
          <ref target="#_idTextAnchor001" type="bibl">Britto 2019)</ref>,
          published literature (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor003"
          type="bibl">Leach 1989</ref>, <ref target="#_idTextAnchor004"
          type="bibl">2021)</ref>, the study of herbarium specimens deposited
          at MH, CAL and RHT, consultation with various online databases such
          as Kew Data Portal (<ref

                  <p style="txt_Normal">The species epithet is based on the
                  collection locality of the type specimen in Cuddalore
                  district of Tamil Nadu, India.</p>

                  <p style="txt_Normal">The species is known from the state of
                  Tamil Nadu at the type location in Cuddalore district and

                  <p style="txt_Normal">Annuals. Erect herbs to 15 cm with
                  opposite branches. Stem pubescent (nonglandular), internodes
                  1.5-2.5 cm long. Leaves opposite, decussate,
                  elliptic-oblanceolate, glabrous, base attenuate, apex acute,
                  margin serrate, 18-22 × 4-5 mm, lateral nerves 3-4 pairs.
                  Petiole 4-7 mm, winged. Stipule 2 × 0.75 mm, lanceolate,
                  glabrous, apex acuminate, margin ciliate. Flowers axillary,
                  6-10 in fasciculate cymes, 1.5-2 mm across; pedicel 1-1.5
                  mm, pubescent, accrescent. Sepals 5, lanceolate, adnate at
                  base, green at middle, pinkish red at both edges, pubescent
                  abaxially, apex acuminate, margin ciliate, 2 × 0.75 mm.
                  Petals 5, white, oblong, apex acute, mucronate, 2 × 1 mm.
                  Stamens 10, two rows, filament glabrous, 1-1.5 mm long,
                  dilated at base, anther 0.2 × 0.2 mm, basifixed. Pistil 1.5
                  mm long, ovary globose, glabrous, 1 × 1 mm, styles 5,
                  pinkish, straight, 0.5 mm long, stigma subcapitate,
                  papillose. Capsule globose, brownish. Seeds numerous,
                  minute, oblong, yellowish brown, surface vesicular.</p>
